3 Day Potty Training... Day 2

As you read in the previous post we are doing the 3 Day Potty Training Method.  We are following it to a "T" in an effort to either prove it wrong or prove it right. Either way, we are not deviating from it.

I last wrote when we were on Day 2 at nap time. We are currently sitting on Day 3 at nap time. I think an update is in order.

Day 2 {post nap}: Kyah woke up dry from his nap. This is great improvement. Or at least we think so. I can't really say for sure when he peed his diaper because frankly I only changed it when I thought it was full enough. It's not like I went around and checked it every 30 minutes to see if it was wet. {however, that's not a bad idea if you are looking to potty train soon}. So far it seems that he has the whole sleep and not pee thing down.

Afternoon/Evening: The rain cleared up. I was really hoping it would stay rainy all weekend so that we wouldn't be tempted to go outside. That's not recommended during this method. You need to be fairly close to the potty {at least within scoop up and run distance}.

I should also mention that we do not believe in having potty's throughout the house. I want him to learn where the bathroom is and to go there. This method also agree's with this.

After being cooped in the house for so long it finally caught up to us all. Potty training is hard work.

However, we did venture out in the afternoon. To the driveway. We are supposed to keep him only in underwear but I did give in and put shorts on him. I didn't want him running around in his ta-dun-tah-duns outside. We worked in the yard a bit and let him ride his scooter. He drove his Ford truck, played basketball with the 3 year old little beauty next door, shared snacks and then took a cruise in her Hot Pink Camaro.

We kept telling him "tell mommy or daddy when you need to go pee pee".
*Note... you are to never ask a child if they need to go to the potty. They will always say no. This method gives the child the control {all kids like control} to learn to tell you when they need to go. However because their attention spans are all of about 3 minutes, you must say this phrase about 500x a day. That is not exaggeration.
Right before we came in the house I saw a wet spot on the driveway. You would think that my first thought would be pee pee, but I actually thought his juice spilled. Really Erin. Really?  Yes.. those shorts that I put on him hid the pee pee from me. Lesson Learned!

We got inside and changed into fresh undies and ate some dinner. We got ready for bed and did our nightly routine of potty time. Nothing.

He went to bed.

Day 3 Morning- Woke up dry again. No accidents while sleeping thus far.

I told him to tell me when he needed to go pee pee.
This lasted for about 45 minutes.

He was helping me crack eggs for our breakfast and took off running to the bathroom. I ran after him and had to hold him over the potty. Sweet boy had his stool in the kitchen helping me at the counter and couldn't reach the potty without it. I felt terrible. However.... HE PEED IN THE POTTY! Finally! He didn't tell me, but he did run to the potty. I'll take it. Baby steps right?
The second time he peed this morning he stopped and stood still and just stared at me. He started peeing and I scooped him up and ran him to the potty. He didn't want to stand on the stool this time. He wanted me to hold him over the potty like I had the time before. Oye!

After a morning snack he tried to run off to another room and poop. Poor kid normally poops about 3-4 times a day. He hasn't gone once since we started training on Saturday morning.  I know he needs to go.

When I found him in our room he screamed at me to leave. I told him that if he needed to go poop we should run to the potty. He took off that direction and darted to his room at the last minute. Oye again! I pulled him from the corner and sat him on the pot. He pooped one little piece and couldn't go anymore.

*While I wouldn't normally give Kyah anything to help poop {cause he eats great and poops 3-4 times a day} I am giving him a little Miralax to help him. The last thing we need is a a constipated boy.

Then it was nap time.

I say that we are making progress. Not as quickly as I would like, but I'll take what I get.

I'm keeping this scripture close by during this process. It's a nice reminder.

"The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love".
Psalm 103:8

I don't recall how old Kyah is. I tried potty training my son at exactly 2 1/2, no go. One month later I prepped him that when we got back from our camping trip we were going to work on going potty in the toilet. We didn't use the three day method but an assortment of the different things I had heard and read which sound like they have some similarities.

It was in July so he ran around with a shirt and some baby legs on but no underwear or diaper. I knew that we would be locked in our house for at least the weekend because I wasn't going anywhere so we could focus on this. The first few days we had a few accidents. One potty on the kitchen floor, one on the basement carpet. Pretty minor. No poop accidents.

We did do rewards when he would go in the toilet. His reward was getting to watch 10 minutes of Cars. He eventually saw the whole thing but in 10 minute increments! That's what motivated him, not m&m's and such.

I was actually contemplating giving up though because it didn't seem like he knew when to go, to anticipate, and I didn't want to push him to train too early. One of my MOPS mentors told me to try to stick with for a week if I could.

By the afternoon of day 3 it was like a switch flipped. He went to the bathroom and knew when he needed to go, he didn't have any accidents. We still put him in pull-ups for nap and bed but after two weeks of staying dry we just did straight underwear.

So I think it was Thursday, Friday, and by Saturday afternoon the switch was flipped. Monday I put him in training pants (thicker underwear to go out) and he immediately peed in them. I decided that we needed to make the change cold turkey so we went with underwear 100% of the time and he never had an issue again (except an accident here or there and that was about 2 1/2 years ago).

Sorry for the long comment, but I know that is what worked for us. We ended up having a rock star potty trainer, but for those 3 days there is no way that I thought we would.
